Sustainability

1 billion brollies end up in landfill each year. We’re putting an end to this by focusing on sustainability through durability - producing something once that will last for years - opting for high-quality, durable materials like infinitely recyclable stainless steel over plastic.

To further maximise our impact, we’ve introduced a Gilley recycling scheme, are certified carbon neutral and are committed to becoming a certified B Corp.

Founders' story

Hi, I'm Reid. Gilley was dreamt up, designed and tested in London.

After far too many long days going to and from Central London with soggy clothes, soaked belongings and rubbish umbrellas that don't work, I learned first-hand why 1 billion are tossed every year.

From the pub to the design studio, we've poured everything into engineering an umbrella for modern life.

Don’t just take our word for it

How does it work?

It's simple. Twist to unlock, attach the handle then pop it open and let your Gilley do its thing!

Check out the "how it works" section on our home page for a quick video.

Will it blow inside out?

Unless you're out in gale force winds, you'll be good! Gilley is windproof up to 30mph - we've even tested this out in a wind tunnel.

We're so confident that we recently bought an industrial grade leaf blower to see if we could break a Gilley, which you can watch here.

What are the handle options?

One handle just doesn't do it for us, so we decided to give you two as standard:

1) A regular sized umbrella handle, and 2) the case which screws onto the regular sized handle to create a longer, ergonomic handle.

Is it okay to keep the damp umbrella in the case?

The whole point of Gilley is to put the umbrella straight back into the case when you're going in and out of places in the rain.

We've got some tricks up our sleeve to stop mould: there's a hydrophobic coating on the canopy, meaning most of the water slides off before you store it away & a microfibre cap on top of the canopy to soak up any excess moisture. Pretty smart, right?

However, like anything that gets damp, we do recommend airing a damp umbrella when convenient, to keep it as fresh as possible. Preferably within 24 hours of use.

How big is the canopy?

98cm diameter, about the same as a regular sized umbrella canopy. Enough to keep a human sized person nice and dry.

What size and weight is the case?

Gilley is smaller, lighter and more compact than a typical 500ml reusable water bottle - you'll forget it's even there (until it rains).

For the specifics, the case is 25.5cm x 5.5cm and weighs 400g with the umbrella (about the same as other similar sized umbrellas).

What colours are available?

Right now it's black, but we'll be expanding the colour range as we grow. Give us a shout at hello@gilley.uk with any suggestions!

Is the handle comfortable?

Yes! We've slimmed it down and also wrapped it in a silicone that feels nice to touch and is grippy.
